I am excited to announce a new way to spend your summer… here at my studio in New Hampshire!

One of the best things about being a maker, furniture designer and artist is getting to share that passion with others. In that spirit, I have decided to open up my home and studio to all of you for a series of summer workshops.

It’s all about learning, experimentation, and community building in our new home studio. The summer here is beautiful, our forest and river peaceful. We are opening up spots to camp and a few bunk beds as well so you can all enjoy the rugged retreat like atmosphere that we are lucky to have year around. Swimming in the river, campfires and potluck meals (to me) are just as important as the techniques and ideas we will be exploring in the shop and classroom.

(Summer 2019) 6/17-6/28 - Design & Fabulous

June 17th-28th

In this 2 week class we will concentrate on the relationship of digital design and production, specifically in steel fabrication. We will be designing in Rhino, cutting parts with our in-house Multicam CNC plasma cutter and assembling/further manipulating through traditional metalworking techniques. I am most interested in how these new technologies can meet hand skill and manipulation to create something extraordinary. In this high paced class students will be encouraged to experiment and build a “pile of samples” that push their work and ideas to new levels! Technical demonstrations and class work time will be augmented with one on one and group lessons on using Rhinoceros CAD program. This is 50% Software and Design, 50% metalworking. Together we will explore how the digital landscape and workflow can help us make our pieces in the real world.

Technical demonstrations will include modeling in scale, digital scanning, basic CAD design in Rhino, CNC plasma cutting, welding, jig making, hydraulic press, die building, sheet/plate/bar metal forming, and use of abrasives.

I would recommend spending some time with Rhino CAD tutorials. Although it is in no way a requirement, it will speed up your understanding of the program and therefore give you the opportunity to make more complex designs.

That said I strongly discourage everyone from bringing a finished design to fabricate during the class. It is important to the class structure that you come with an open mind to design and build new work.

This is a one of a kind experience. I have taught classes like this before but never in my own studio which I have been tooling up and building to work in exactly this way. I will be sharing techniques developed over the past 10 years in my studio, as well as, encouraging everyone in this very special class to think of it as an open exchange of ideas. Let’s make something no one has ever seen before!!
